Citadel Source are delighted to be working in partnership with an acquisitive contracting business on the South West Coast of Devon, in search of a Project Accountant. This is a newly created, high-impact role where you’ll act as the finance partner to Commercial and Operations teams, ensuring projects are financially controlled, accurately reported, and delivering against expectations.
The role
The Project Accountant will take ownership of financials across multiple live projects, ensuring costs, revenues, and cash flow are consistently tracked and controlled, while supporting the Commercial team on applications, cash collection, and financial decision-making. This is a hands-on, business-facing role offering excellent exposure to senior stakeholders and board-level reporting.
As Project Accountant, your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Project Accounting & Performance
- Prepare monthly project accounts ensuring accurate cost and revenue recognition
- Partner with the Commercial team to produce Cost Value Reconciliations (CVRs)
- Analyse project performance vs budget and forecast, explaining key variances
- Produce project-level margin and cash flow reporting for senior management
- Maintain accurate cost coding and complete balance sheet reconciliations
Payment Applications & Cash Flow
- Support preparation and submission of client payment applications
- Reconcile applications against contracts, variations and prior submissions
- Track applications through to payment and flag delays or disputes
- Ensure alignment between applications and reported income
Debtors & Cash Collection
- Manage and monitor the trade debtors ledger across the group
- Drive cash collection alongside Commercial teams
- Produce aged debt analysis and highlight risks or overdue balances
- Resolve invoice queries through effective client and internal engagement
Business Partnering
- Act as the main finance contact for Commercial and Operations teams
- Provide robust financial challenge and insight
- Attend project reviews and ensure the agreed position is reflected in the accounts
Controls & Reporting
- Maintain strong financial controls across project accounting processes
- Support year-end audit and statutory reporting requirements
- Contribute to the monthly board reporting pack
About you
- Fully qualified (CIMA / ACCA / ACA)
- Strong background in project or management accounting
- Experience in construction, engineering, or project-led environments
- Experience managing trade debtors/credit control processes
- Strong Excel skills and confident working with financial systems
- Commercially minded, with the confidence to challenge stakeholders
